You have had a chance to learn and practice close reading of biblical passages and the way that various contexts guide us in understanding them better. A little bit of help from a study Bible or short commentary can explain some of the unfamiliar images and symbolism for you. Finally, if you shift your thinking from considering Revelation as a set of future predictions to a book of message meant to comfort and inspire followers of Jesus in their current situation, suddenly the depiction of extreme events start to become meaningful and pertinent to us in the here and now. As with the rest of our work interpreting the New Testament, we are not asking you to solve all the mysteries of a given passage. You just need to read it analytically, explain it in its contexts, and make some connections to contemporary application. You can do that (with God’s help)!

Throughout the semester, students will prepare a brief reflection, speculation, comment, or question concerning an aspect of the reading(s) assigned for the class/week. Ideally two or three paragraphs, these reflections are to be no more than one typed page (1.5 spaced) due via the eLC before class. Reflections will be scored based on: engagement with the material, and application of a concept discussed in the reading to a personal/media-related experience. Reaction papers are worth 5 points per paper, for a total of 105 points overall. The best papers will engage with the course material, not simply repeat or summarize material. Engaging with the material should involve expanding upon course concepts, critiquing course material, and/or applying it to some sort of a scenario, whether from one’s own experiences or from the media. Papers that fail to engage with the material, those that do not meet the one-page requirement will result in lost points. Note: No late reflections will be accepted, except in the case of an emergency (provided the right documentation is given to the instructor, within 2 days of the incident). Points will be deducted if students fail to meet the 1-page requirement.
