Sexual abuse of women in u.s.” to show that women are sexually assaulted by correctional

After reading chapters 3-4 “Are Prisons
Obsolete?”, Davis has made important points
regarding the prison systems that we have
today. Davis uses several techniques to help
make her arguments about the inefficient
prison system. When the first prisons were
established in the beginning of the eighteenth
century the prison system was still not a
suitable place for the prisoners. Davis has used
a personal experience from Charles Dickens
who visited the Eastern Penitentiary in 1842
and describes his visit as “the system is rigid,
strict, and hopeless solitary confinement.
believe in its effects to be cruel and wrong
From Dickens personal experience l found that
this was shocking since prisons today are no
different than when prisons were first
established. Davis has mentioned John
Howard, a prison reformer in 1777, whose idea
a
was that prisons are place of self reflection
and self reform. Personally l agree with John
Howard and his idea of what a prison
environment should be but from Dickens experience it is the total opposite. Much like
super maximum security prisons that we have
today Davis has described it as a place that has
state of the art technology dedicated to
monitor, isolate and regulate inmates. l do not
see a benefit to having super maximum
security prisons but this type of system is keen
on regulating inmates, much like Charles
Dickens has mentioned that the prison system
is “rigid, and strict”. What would happen to a
prisoner if they are constantly regulated would
it be beneficial to the prisoner? One thing
found interesting is how women’s prisons are
no different than that of male prison system
Both have forms of mistreatment towards
prisoners. Davis has shown an example of
mistreatment of women prisons using a
personal experience from Afeni Shakur-a former inmate in a womens prison, Shakur
describes how she was sexually assaulted in
prison Davis has also used a quote from a
1996 Human Rights Watch report on the sexual
abuse of women in U.S. prisons which says
“Findings indicate that being a women prisoner
is U.S. state prisons can be terrifying
a
experience. lf you are sexually abused you
cannot escape from your abuser”. Davis also
has used an excerpt from “All too Familiar:
Sexual Abuse of Women in U.S.” to show that
women are sexually assaulted by correctional
employees. Through chapters 3-4 Davis has
shown how prisons are as what she says are
“obsolete” she uses techniques of using
personal experiences, and historical texts to
back this claim

Choose a genre of art, film, music, literature (poetry or fiction), photography, or video game that you enjoy (if you have another type of text in mind, run it past me first).

Choose a genre of art, film, music, literature (poetry or fiction), photography, or video game that you enjoy (if you have another type of text in mind, run it past me first). For example, film and literature genres can include horror, sci-fi, romance, westerns, fantasy, or steam punk, but the work must be fictional. Music genres can include country, hard rock, hip hop, techno, dubstep, or blue grass. There are other genres, too, but whatever genre you choose, it must be widely recognized – avoid creating your own genre that mixes various styles but would not be recognized on a national scale.
Your task is to then identify what are the salient features of that genre; in other words, if you were to create a “recipe” for what is required for a work to be a part of the genre, what would it be? What separates it from other genres and makes it unique? Put another way, how do we immediately know we’re seeing or hearing something that belongs to a particular genre?

Although considered the worst form of torture, the pennsylvania system of total isolation, silence, and solitude for the prisoners could be an opportunity for self-reflection, depending on the prisoner’s mental attitude.

1-2 page (typed, double-spaced) response with your initial thoughts, feelings, questions, and
” responses to the Chapters 3-4 of Are Prisons Obsolete?
That’s my initial thought
I find it interesting that the current penitentiary systems have their root in religious ideologies. It is ironic also to realize that the punitive prison system was a product of concerted efforts to create a better corrective system by the reformers (Davis 40). However, an analysis of the penitentiary system shows that prisons are moving away from the deadly and cruel methods of correction to more lenient approaches to offenders. It is interesting to note how people have moved away from a punitive system where they employed torture, burning, mutilating, or burying offenders alive, to a more corrective one where the only punishment is confinement to maximum prisons. Based on history, there is hope that more humane systems of correction will be instituted as time goes by.
The ideas of John Howard, such as disciplined self-reflection and internalization, are fascinating concepts incorporated in the Penitentiary Act of 1799 (Davis 46). I think that if prisoners could change their perception about their incarceration, they would have it easy in cells as they wait to serve their sentences. A shift in mental perspective from seeing oneself as a prisoner in jail to a monk in a monastery and seeing the sentence period as an opportunity for self-reflection and connecting with God can help reform even the most hardcore offenders. Although considered the worst form of torture, the Pennsylvania system of total isolation, silence, and solitude for the prisoners could be an opportunity for self-reflection, depending on the prisoner’s mental attitude. This form of physical confinement could have emancipatory effects on the prisoner, such as allowing the soul to flourish (Davis 48). This idea shows the involvement of religious leaders in shaping the penitentiary system.
From harsh punitive measures to lenient modes of confinement, there is more the prison system can do to offer better services to the offenders and encourage them to reform.
